In the past, apprenticeships were restricted to traditional trades - but not any more!

There are now loads of apprenticeships available across the creative industries – from floristry to fashion design; from textiles to technical theatre. Let your imagination run wild – the possibilities are endless!

This is great news for learners looking for a practical route into a creative career. They can gain hands-on experience and work on exciting projects – all while earning a good salary. Only a few years ago, creatives had to work unpaid internships to gain hands-on experience. This created a limited and elitist sector made-up of those who could afford to work for free. Creative apprenticeships and the shift to paid practical training will give people from all backgrounds the same opportunity to work in the creative industries – which is good news for everyone.

You don't have to be the next Michelangelo to land a creative apprenticeship; there are courses available for a wide range of job roles. Take a look:

Social media & marketing

Social media and digital marketing are booming, so this is a lucrative industry to get into. There are advanced (level 3) and higher (level 4) apprenticeships available that could help you become an SEO specialist, social media assistant or digital marketeer.

Fashion & textiles

Creatives looking to become fashion designers usually have to slog it out at art school before battling for competitive positions once they've graduated. Fashion and textile apprenticeships cover the whole industry – from processing and production to wholesale and trading – giving learners well-rounded work experience when they complete. These apprenticeships are also available at level 2 and level 3, so you don't need a foundation degree to apply.

Technical theatre

Technical theatre specialists use lighting, sound and special effects to create the right ambience for live performance. Theatre apprenticeships allow learners to gain the technical backstage skills they need to progress their career – from level 2 to level 3 and beyond.

Junior journalist

Traditionally, journalists have gone to university – but as the industry has changed, their training has changed too. Apprentice journalists learn all the same researching, writing, interviewing and editing skills as graduates, but they also get years of experience as on-the-job journalists, making them even more employable. There are advanced journalist apprenticeships available at level 3.
